Architect:
Adrian Smith (formerly of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill)
Completion:
2009
Description:
This massive new addition to the Chicago skyline is Chicago's second tallest building after the Willis (Sears) Tower) and lays claims to holding title to being the second tallest building in the U.S., counting the spire. The building has a sophisticated skin of glass and metal ribs that echo 330 N. Wabash (formerly known as the IBM Building) by Mies Van de Rohe, and steps back at levels roughly matching the neighboring Wrigley Building, condos at 405 N. Wabash and 330 N. Wabash. Those setbacks help it fit into the site that was formerly home to the 7-story Sun-Times building. While some may feel the building is too big for the site, its varying profiles, reflective skin and pedestrian-friendly riverwalk will win many admirers as well. It certainly is striking from countless vantage points around the city.
