Architect:
Tadao Ando
Completion:
2002
Description:
Like many of Ando's designs, the Modern in Fort Worth is an introverted work, in this case oriented around a reflecting pool. The signature gesture is a Y-shaped structure present in three glass-enclosed galleries overlooking the water. The main lobby and a restaurant also border this feature, a space contained at the periphery by a concrete wall.
In addition to the indoor galleries is a roof garden with sculptures, vegetation, and a view of the Kimbell across the street. A tall, corten steel sculpture by Richard Serra also resides in front of the museum - its relationship to the nearby Will Rogers Memorial tower is particularly evident from the roof garden.
