Architect:
Peter Goering
Completion:
1969
Description:
The Medical Sciences Building, which houses administrative offices, is one of several concrete buildings on the Univeristy of Toronto campus built in the so-called "Brutalist" style. Its facade is enlivened by textured, precast concrete panels. (The additional cost of these panels was reportedly paid for with the building's public art set-aside.) The structure contrasts with the many Gothic style buildings of the original campus and the new glass and steel buildings nearby, completed since 2008.
In retirement, Goering became known as one of the driving forces behind the designation of the Torrance Barrens Conservation Reserve, Canada's first "dark-sky preserve," protecting the area from light pollution in order to view the night sky.
