Leslie Dan Pharmacy Building

Architect:

Completion:

2006

Description:

The Leslie L. Dan Pharmacy Building stands among the complex of medical buildings on the University of Toronto campus. Its five-story base and seven story top respond to the height of lower, traditional buildings to the north and west, and to the modern glass office building to the south. Visible through the clear glass facade are two "pods" that house lecture halls and hang above the entrance in the atrium. At night, they are lit in changing colors.

Sir Norman Foster and his firm were selected in an international design competition for this prominent spot on the campus. It is the firm's first building in Canada. The building is named for Leslie Dan, founder of the drug manufacturing firm Novopharm, who made major donations for the building and the pharmacy school. The total building cost was $75 million.
