Description:
This headquarters for Diane Von Furstenberg Studio in Manhattan's Meatpacking District is a transformation of two landmark brick buildings. Given the status of the existing, the exterior only hints at the changes inside, most overtly via the crystalline structure atop the roof. From the entrance on 14th Street a staircase climbs diagonally towards the skylight structure, creating a diagonal slice of light through the building.
The interior is a diverse mix of pubic and private spaces, such as a store on the ground floor, offices above and an apartment at the top. The stair's balustrades are marked by crystals, illuminated by mirrors in the skylight that track the sun's path. This guarantees light into the deepest parts of the building and a highlighting of the crystal "stairdelier" that cuts through the building.
