Cooper Union Academic Building

Page history last edited by Steven 1 mo ago

Architect:

Morphosis

Completion:

2009

Description:

This Cooper Union academic building (officially called only "41 Cooper Square") is the first building in New York City by Morphosis. It features a perforated, stainless steel skin with operable panels, one of many energy-saving features of its LEED Gold-standard design. The true wall of windows can be seen behind the skin. A cut-out through the Third Avenue facade creates a dramatic feature from the street, and hints at the internal atrium that the architects describe as a "vertical piazza." (At the time this writer visited on a Sunday, just as the building had opened, a Cooper Union ID was required to get to the atrium, but it should be well worth seeing if that policy changes or is different during the week.)
