By using wiki software, The Archi-Tourist "allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser." But in order to keep a reasonable amount of quality control, only invited users may contribute, rather than allowing anybody with web access to create and edit entries. If you'd like to contribute, simply e-mail the site's owner for consideration.
Format
Entries should follow the established format (example here), preferably by copying and pasting the code from a previous entry (if possible on this host, a template will be made to aid in creating entries). Over time this format will probably evolve, especially as more bells and whistles become available and more people contribute, so think of it as a starting point. Here's a rundown of the information provided:
Architect: Name of architect(s)
Completion: Year of completion/occupancy
Description: Brief, one- or two-paragraph description of the architectural features that make the building worth visiting
Images: Up to two separate image files, preferably one exterior and one interior (also see note below)
Address: Postal address with city, state, postal code, and phone number, if applicable
Map/Directions/Info: Google maps satellite view with labels embedded (500x350 pixels), followed by a brief description of the area that includes a link to the Google Map, cross and/or adjacent streets, description of accessibility, and hours of operation, if applicable
Nearby: Links to nearby buildings on The Archi-Tourist
Other buildings by architect: Links to other buildings by architect on The Archi-Tourist
Links: External links, including building/client, architect, articles, photographs, etc.
Tags: Geographical tags work from continent to city, as follows: continent, country, state/province, city (suburbs should be named for their nearby metropolitan areas, to limit the number of cities), displayed in a tree-like hierarchy on the sidebar
Our host, PBwiki, uses simplified code and an easy WYSIWYG editor, though help documents are available to make it even easier. As they improve their service, we'll potentially add some more features to this site, such as templates for new documents, as mentioned above.
Images
PBwiki hosts this page for free, supplying 200mb of disk space for image storage. To preserve disk space, images should be jpgs with a med-high compression factor and a maximum size of 500x375@72dpi. If possible, images can be linked from other web pages or servers (like Flickr), with permission. Given the nature of the site, it is preferable for images to be taken by visitors (you), as opposed to professional photographers. This not only avoids problems with copyright, but also gives people an idea of what they'll be able to actually see when visiting a building. Also, before uploading an image, make sure the file name is unique and hasn't been used before; if a file is uploaded to the server with a name already used, it is automatically renamed.
Again, if you'd like to be a contributor, simply e-mail architourist for consideration. Thanks for your interest in The Archi-Tourist and for considering to be a contributor.
