Architect:
Diller Scofidio + Renfro
with FxFowle Architects
Completion:
2009
Description:
The first phase open to the public of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts transformation is Alice Tully Hall. The main component of the building is a performance space for 1,100 with supposedly marvelous acoustics for intimate chamber music. Undulating wood walls (some areas backlit) are the distinctive feature of this space.
From the outside the upper floors cantilever over the plaza, an outdoor room adjacent to a new cafe situated in a double-height space behind large glass walls. For many the plaza and cafe are all that they'll experience of the building, but both are worthwhile, especially when seen in relation to its previous incarnation. DS+R have activated the public face of Alice Tully Hall, in effect making Lincoln Center a bit more approachable.
