The Archi-Tourist

100 11th Avenue

Page history last edited by Steven 1 mo ago

Architect:

Jean Nouvel

Completion:

2009 (nearing completion September 2009)

Description:

This 23-story apartment building curves around the corner from 11th Avenue onto 19th Street, with a glass curtain wall facing the Hudson River to the west and south. The windows and frames are of varying sizes and angles, and are made of glass said to be of differing transparencies, creating a subtle faceted effect as they reflect the light and sky. The curved facade and irregularity of the windows create a very different effect from the strict geometry of Nouvel's 40 Mercer Residences, even though the two buildings use similar materials. Each building adapts to its surroundings, in this case responding to the angle of the West Side Highway, the curves of Frank Geary's IAC InterActiveCorp headquarters building across the street, and the shimmering Hudson River.
